Selected Application Summary

The selected application will support greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures across the buildings, energy, transportation, and natural lands sectors. The selected application will conduct audits and implement energy efficiency and weatherization upgrades to three Tribal buildings, install Level 2 and Level 3 electric vehicle (EV) chargers, convert the Tribe’s vehicle fleet to EVs, construct a ground-mounted solar array above the Zims Hot Springs parking lot, and support carbon sequestration through land restoration and afforestation (introducing trees in areas that have not been forested previously) efforts. The project will build climate resiliency and provide substantial community benefits including cleaner air, more affordable transportation, and decreased energy costs.

Key Things to Know

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:

  • Conduct energy audits and energy efficiency improvements on three Tribal buildings with upgrades including weatherizing, installing energy efficient windows and doors, sealing air leaks, converting to electric heat pumps, and insulating water heaters.
  • Build multiple solar arrays to increase remote emergency management options, improve power reliability, and protect fish and the climate by reducing the Tribe’s dependence on fossil fuels and hydropower.
  • Install 72 Level 2 and Level 3 EV chargers and transition the Tribe’s vehicle fleet to EVs.
  • Plant nearly 380,000 trees on 2,137 acres of Tribal and privately owned land resulting in multiple benefits such as carbon sequestration, protection of wildlife habitat, increased stream shading, sequestration of nonpoint pollution, and improvements to fish habitat.

Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Nez Perce Tribe’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (9.4 MB).

1  The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.

About EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) Implementation Grants

Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA’s CPRG program will provide nearly $5 billion in grants for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution while benefitting low-income and disadvantaged communities.
