Selected Application Summary
The selected application will support the installation of rooftop and ground-mounted solar arrays that will serve multiple Tribal buildings; retrofitting buildings with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) air-source and ground source heat pumps; and the conversion of heat pump storage hot water heaters. The selected project will also support the planning, development, and installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the Tribal government campus. The project will reduce the Pokagon Band’s energy costs and dependency on non-renewable resources to provide a cleaner airshed in the Tribal and surrounding community.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Install one rooftop and three ground-mounted solar arrays to offset the electricity needs of the buildings served.
- Retrofit nine tribal buildings with HVAC air-source and ground source heat pumps and retrofit six of the buildings with converted heat pump storage hot water heaters.
- Support the planning, development, and installation of EV charging stations across the Tribal government campus to enable the Pokagon Band to transition its 120 gas-powered fleet to a combination of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
- Convert gas-powered maintenance equipment and supplies to electric alternatives, eliminating mobile greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reduce energy costs, noise pollution, GHG emissions, and the Tribal community’s reliance on the energy grid.
- Help the Tribe become more resilient to anticipated electricity shortfalls in Michigan.
