Selected Application Summary

The selected application will support the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin in their goal to achieve energy sovereignty and energy efficiency while simultaneously producing more community-based renewable energy. Through a series of energy audits, the Tribe will identify which residential, commercial, and government buildings are of highest priority to make energy efficiency improvements. By decreasing energy consumption through this measure, the Tribe will reduce harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as well as energy costs for the Tribe’s low-income and disadvantaged residents. Additionally, the Tribe plans to install a 1-megawatt solar electricity system on Tribal land to offset approximately 65% of residential energy consumption.

Key Things to Know

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:

  • Reduce residential energy costs, while improving energy security, by generating clean energy through solar projects.
  • Improve public health outcomes in the Tribal community by reducing reliance on fossil fuels that emit hazardous air pollutants.
  • Contribute 1 megawatt of renewable energy produced on the Tribe’s land to the energy grid, offsetting approximately 65% of residential energy consumption.
  • Provide training for two Tribal members in solar technology maintenance and building energy efficiency audits to encourage workforce development.
  • Create a Sustainability Action Fund from the savings of the proposed solar electric system to ensure a consistent source of funds to assist the Tribe in pursuing their sustainability goals.

Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in St Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (2.1 MB).

1  The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
