Selected Application Summary
The selected application will fund priority measures in Montana that aim to reverse the trend of forested and agricultural lands becoming net carbon emitters. The grant will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other criteria air pollutants by improving forest management, expanding urban and community forests, mitigating coal seam fires, and supporting local initiatives to improve soil health and reduce pollution from agriculture. The grant will also support increased funding for wildfire mitigation.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Plant 2.5 million trees and expand forest management to 8,000 acres.
- Increase canopy coverage in up to 70 communities, focusing on disadvantaged communities, to increase biodiversity and forest health while sequestering carbon.
- Create new seasonal jobs in Tribal communities to support forest management and wildfire mitigation.
- Improve air quality in low-income and disadvantaged communities by eliminating burning coal seams that release GHG emissions and other harmful pollutants.
- Support family-sustaining ranches by improving land productivity and reducing land loss.
- Improve water quality and resilience of aquatic resources through projects focused on reducing pollution and algal blooms caused by agricultural runoff.
- Collaborate with nonprofit agriculture organizations, industry groups, and educational institutions to implement an adaptive approach for managing livestock to improve grazing management on ranchlands, allow the soil to sequester more carbon, and reduce livestock waste.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of July 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
