Power Sector Emissions, Operations, and Environmental Data

EPA has monitored and collected emissions and operating data from power plants since 1990. EPA has also gathered ambient data to track changes in the environment since the mid-1980s. Click on the images below to view information on the major data tools and resources available from the Power Sector Programs.

For a recorded introduction to the suite of data and tools available from the Clean Air and Power Division (CAPD), please see the April 2020 AskCAMD slides  or recording.

CAPD's EmPOWER Air Data Challenge

Each academic year, CAPD hosts a challenge inviting researchers at universities or think tanks to submit innovative ideas for use of CAPD’s Power Sector Emissions data, Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNET) data, Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID) data, and Allowance Trading Program data.

Other EPA Resources

  • Emissions Inventories and Reports
    • National Emissions Inventory (NEI): a comprehensive and detailed estimate of air emissions of criteria pollutants, criteria precursors, and hazardous air pollutants from air emissions sources.

    • Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: an annual report that provides a comprehensive accounting of total greenhouse gas emissions for all man-made sources in the U.S.

    • Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP): requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) data and other relevant information from large GHG emission sources, fuel and industrial gas suppliers, and CO2 injection sites in the U.S.

    • Our Nation's Air: Status and Trends: This annual report, titled Our Nation's Air, summarizes the nation's air quality status and trends.

  • Tools
    • AVoided Emissions and geneRation Tool (AVERT): a tool that estimates the emissions benefits of energy efficiency and renewable energy policies and programs.

    • CO-Benefits Risk Assessment (COBRA) Health Impacts Screening and Mapping Tool: a tool that estimates the health and economic benefits of clean energy policies.

    • Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Tools: these tools will help users estimate the environmental benefits of CHP and evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a potential CHP system.

    • Estimating the Health Benefits per-Kilowatt Hour of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: a set of values that help state and local government policymakers and other stakeholders estimate the outdoor air quality-related public health benefits of investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

    • Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator: a tool to translate abstract measurements of GHG emissions into concrete terms you can understand, such as the annual emissions from cars, households, or power plants.

    • Toolbox for Renewable Energy Project Development: this toolbox examines six key issues that have important implications for developing on-site solar projects.

    • AirNow: a website and app that allows you to check your local air quality.
