AirNow Fire and Smoke Map: Extension of the U.S.-Wide Correction for PurpleAir PM2.5 Sensors Webinar Archive

This webinar, recorded on May 19, 2021, featured presenters from EPA's ORD and OAR and the U.S. Forest Service presenting "AirNow Fire and Smoke Map: Extension of the U.S.-Wide Correction for PurpleAir PM2.5 Sensors." In recent years, data from particulate matter sensors have become a valuable tool for broadening our understanding of air quality impacts from wildfire smoke and demonstrating the localized nature of smoke plumes. In 2020, EPA, in conjunction with state, tribal and local air monitoring partners and the US Forest Service, enhanced the AirNow Fire and Smoke map by adding PurpleAir sensor data to data from the permanent and temporary air monitors and smoke information already on the map.

In preparation for the 2021 wildfire season, several enhancements will be made including an extended correction equation. This webinar briefly introduced the map and some of the anticipated new pilot features for 2021 and followed with a discussion of why an extended sensor data correction was needed and how it was developed.
