State Environmental Agencies' Research Needs

EPA works in partnership with environmental and public health officials across the country to connect them with EPA research and applied science tools and resources to address their most pressing challenges. To better align EPA research with states’ science priorities, EPA uses the results of biennial State Research Needs Assessments conducted by ECOS/ERIS, as well as feedback we hear directly from states and territories during various meetings and engagements.

ERIS conducted its sixth biennial survey in Fall 2024. 46 states, two territories and the District of Columbia responded to the survey, the largest number of respondents to an ERIS state research needs survey to date.

ERIS is currently working on its 2026 survey, expected to be available in Winter 2027.
