Elevated Temperature Landfills: Case Studies, Indicators, and Knowledge Gaps Webinar Archive
This webinar, recorded on July 16, 2025, was titled "Elevated Temperature Landfills: Case Studies, Indicators, and Knowledge Gaps.” The generation of heat in a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is normal as microorganisms break down waste. Elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs) are MSW landfills that exhibit temperatures above regulatory thresholds (145° Fahrenheit) due to abnormal chemical reactions within the waste mass.
This presentation provided examples of different ETLFs, and the various strategies used to manage or control the sub-surface reactions, the indicators or symptoms operators and regulators should be looking for and identify some key questions that remain unanswered.
