SmartWay High Performers: Dray Truck Carriers, Particulate Matter and Nitrogen Oxides Metrics

SmartWay logo with a cloud, leaf and road.

Among SmartWay ‘dray’ truck carriers – those fleets that move goods over a short distance at seaports, intermodal terminals, and similar locations – about 15 percent are on the SmartWay High Performer list for particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides  (NOx).

Diesel exhaust from trucks contributes to particulate matter or “soot” as well as to emissions of NOx, especially in and around freight hubs, like ports, distribution centers, and railyards. PM is an air pollutant harmful to human health and damaging to the environment.  NOx reacts with other chemicals in the air to form both particulate matter and ozone.  Both of these are also harmful when inhaled due to effects on the respiratory system.

Fleets emitting lower levels of PM and NOx help to reduce human exposure and protect the environment. Fleets on the SmartWay high performing dray truck carrier list for PM and  NOx help address environmental and public health concerns in disadvantaged communities.
