Community Involvement Toolkit

The Superfund Community Involvement Toolkit provides Superfund site teams and community involvement staff with practical aids for designing and enhancing community involvement activities throughout the Superfund cleanup process. Each tool describes an activity or resource that a Superfund site team may use to involve and inform the community.

The CI Toolkit  should be used in conjunction with the Superfund Community Involvement Handbook, which provides guidance to EPA staff on how to plan and implement community involvement activities at Superfund sites.

Please see this overview for short descriptions of each community involvement tool.

Community Guides

The Community Guide series describes cleanup methods used at Superfund and other hazardous waste cleanup sites. Each guide answers six questions about the method:

  1. What is it?
  2. How does it work?
  3. How long will it take?
  4. Is it safe?
  5. How might it affect me?
  6. Why use it?

Each guide also contains information about how many Superfund sites have used the technology and a case study description.  These guides are available in English and Spanish.
