Did you know that using the right tires can help you cut down on fuel costs and harmful NOx emissions? EPA has demonstrated that certain low rolling resistance (LRR) tires and retread technologies can reduce both costs and emissions for long-haul class 8 tractor-trailers by 3% or more. 

Types of LRR Technologies

An LRR technology is any tire technology that reduces rolling resistance and provides a fuel or emissions benefit for the engine. There are two types of LRR technologies:

• Tires
• Retreads

Retread technologies are divided into two categories – mold cure and pre cure. Each system has unique advantages but both systems produce equally effective retreaded tires.

Axle Position

LRR tires are used on three axle positions:

1. Trailer (also meets LRR target for Steer and Drive positions)
2. Steer (also meets LRR target for Drive position)
3. Drive

Retread technologies can only be used on two axle positions:

1. Trailer
2. Drive

Fleet operators should check with the tire manufacturer of multi-position tires to confirm that the tire is suitable for the intended application. For SmartWay designated tractors equipped with 6x2 drivetrains, verified steer or trailer tires may be used on the tag axle (with tire manufacturer approval) for meeting the designated tractor specification requirements.

Maximum Efficiency

To achieve fuel savings of three percent or more, the following requirements must be met:

Tires

1. Tires are used on the axle positions for which verification is specified.
2. Verified low rolling resistance tires are installed on all axle positions of the tractor and trailer. (Note: EPA has also demonstrated incremental fuel savings when low rolling resistance tires are used just on the tractor and/or just on the trailer.)
3. All tires are properly inflated according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Retreads

1. Verified retread technologies are used on both the drive and trailer axles. (Note: EPA has also demonstrated incremental fuel savings when low rolling resistance  tires are used just on the tractor and/or just on the trailer.)
2. The retread technologies are used on the axle positions for which verification is specified.
3. Verified low rolling resistance steer tires are used.
4. All tires are properly inflated according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
