SEMS Search User Guide
SEMS is the official repository for site and non-site specific Superfund data in support of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). It contains information on hazardous waste site assessment and remediation from 1983 to the present.
This page is a brief user guide to the SEMS Search. Use one or more search options to narrow results. Only sites matching all selected criteria will be returned.

Facility Identification Search Option
From the Facility Identification dropdown list, choose Facility Name or SEMS EPA ID.
Facility Name
Enter a complete or partial facility name.
- Beginning With returns results where the name starts with your value.
- Exact Match returns only results that exactly match what you entered.
- Containing can be useful when entering partial names.
SEMS EPA ID
Enter a complete or partial SEMS EPA ID.
- Beginning With returns results where the ID starts with your value.
- Exact Match returns only results that exactly match what you entered.
- Containing can be useful when entering partial IDs.
Geography Search Option
Select from the following geography fields: ZIP Code, Address, City, County, and State.
ZIP Code
Enter one or more digits.
Address
Enter a complete or partial street address.
- Beginning With returns results where the address starts with your value.
- Exact Match returns only results that exactly match what you entered.
- Containing can be useful when entering partial addresses.
City
Enter a complete or partial city name. State is required when using City.
County
Enter a complete or partial county name. State is required when using County.
State
Select a state from the dropdown list.
Note: Envirofacts contains a large number of facilities. Starting with a small geographic area is strongly recommended.
National Priority List (NPL) Sites Only
Select this option to retrieve only sites that are proposed, currently, or previously on the NPL.
Contaminant Search
Select a contaminant from the dropdown list to locate sites associated with that contaminant.
SEMS Search Results
Search results provide basic facility information for sites that match your criteria. Use the links in the results to open additional reports when available.
Basic facility information
- SEMS EPA ID – Use the SEMS EPA ID link to view facility information in the SEMS Detail View.
- Facility information – Use the “View Facility Information” link to view EPA facility information for the site.
- Site name
- Address – The facility address is a combination of:
- Street
- City
- State
- ZIP code
- County
- Federal facility
- NPL status
- Non-NPL status
- Latitude/longitude
- Contaminants
SEMS Detail View
The SEMS Detail View organizes information by topic, including site information and contaminants.
