Elevated Temperature Landfills: Case Studies, Indicators, and Knowledge Gaps

Elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs) are municipal solid waste landfills that exhibit temperatures above regulatory thresholds (145° Fahrenheit) due to abnormal chemical reactions within the waste mass. These reactions can cause changes in landfill gas composition, noxious odors, severe waste settlement, leachate seeps and outbreaks, and generate strong leachate, which can add to operator costs for facility management and impact human health. This EPA webinar presentation will provide examples of strategies different ETLFs have used to manage or control sub-surface reactions, the indicators or symptoms operators and regulators should be looking for, and some key questions that remain unanswered.
