Electric power is generated through various technologies that use fossil fuels, nuclear fuels or renewable energy.

About 60% of U.S. electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, mostly coal and natural gas.
- In 2022, electric power generation produced the second largest share of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program provides nearly $5 billion in grants for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution and to benefit low income and disadvantaged communities.
