Carcinogens
Some chemicals that are reportable to the TRI Program are included on OSHA’s list of carcinogens. Carcinogens are agents that can cause cancer in humans. A list of the TRI carcinogens can be found in the TRI basis of OSHA carcinogens technical document (pdf).
This map shows the locations of the facilities that reported carcinogens to TRI for 2023, sized by their relative release quantities to air. Click on a facility for more details on its reporting.

This graph shows the 10-year trend in air releases of OSHA carcinogens.
From 2014 to 2023:
- Air releases of OSHA carcinogens: 6.9 million pound decrease (-10%).
- Each year, the OSHA carcinogens released into air in the highest quantities were styrene, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde. Releases to air of these chemicals for 2023 were primarily from:
- Styrene: Plastics product manufacturing and boat building.
- Acetaldehyde: Paper manufacturing and ethyl alcohol manufacturing.
- Formaldehyde: Paper manufacturing and wood products manufacturing.
- Industry sectors that reported the largest decreases in OSHA carcinogen releases were:
- Chemical manufacturing decreased by 3 million pounds (-19%).
- Paper products manufacturing decreased by 2.2 million pounds (-33%).
