Chemical Profiles
This section profiles Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) chemicals of interest to the public, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lawmakers, and industry. These chemical profiles include:
- Chemicals designated by the TRI Program as chemicals of special concern. TRI chemicals of special concern include chemicals that are not only toxic, but also break down slowly in the environment and build up (bioaccumulate) in organisms throughout the food web. TRI reporting thresholds for these chemicals are either 10 pounds or 100 pounds, which is much lower than the reporting threshold for most TRI chemicals. For dioxin and dioxin-like compounds, the reporting threshold is even lower at 0.1 gram. The chemicals of special concern covered in this section are lead, mercury, dioxin and dioxin-like compounds, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
- Chemicals that are classified as carcinogens. The TRI chemical list includes over 200 chemicals and chemical categories that are defined as carcinogens (agents that can cause cancer) under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). The carcinogens covered in this section are ethylene oxide, and the combined group of all TRI chemicals classified as carcinogens.
You can generate a fact sheet for any TRI chemical using TRI Explorer. The full list of TRI chemicals can be found here.
