States and Metropolitan Areas
Facilities located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and in 5 territories reported to the TRI Program for 2023. Texas, Ohio, and California had the most facilities report to TRI, and together accounted for 20% of the total number of facilities that reported for 2023.
Urban areas contain approximately 80% of the U.S. population as well as many industrial and federal TRI facilities. The Office of Management and Budget defines Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) as areas consisting of the county or counties “associated with at least one urban area of at least 50,000 population, plus adjacent counties having a high degree of social and economic integration” as measured through commuting ties. All MSAs are displayed on the “Where You Live” map. The chart below shows TRI chemical releases per square mile for 2023 for the 10 most populous MSAs.
